Glamourous New Years Hair Styles Inspired by Mad Men

We can’t be the only ones in love with AMC’s drama Mad Men staring the buxom redhead, Joan Holloway Harris (Christina Hendricks) and bored blonde housewife Betty Draper (January Jones). We have watched our favorite Mad Men actresses each season as they transition from conservative 1950’s up dos to sleek and modern hair styles of the early 1960’s. Why not recreate the hair styles from these classy vixens for New Year’s?

Joan Holloway is one of the masterminds behind Sterling Cooper Draper Price; she always keeps her cool in every situation and she is the glue that holds the agency together. Joan’s signature style consists of thick liquid eyeliner, bold lips, and her classic fiery red up do. She is one of those women who looks stunning with shorter hair and while we have seen her off set with longer hair, the vibrant short red hair is the most flattering hair color and cut for her.

Although you most likely will not have time to achieve Joan Holloway’s vibrant red hair color before New Years, her bouffant up dos are a must for short or long hair. With a little back-combing, a side-swept bang, and a lot of hairspray you or your hair stylist can easily achieve her 1950’s glamour.

Joan Holloway Fun Fact: Christina Hendricks (Joan Holloway) does not have natural red hair, she is a natural blonde and has been dying her hair since she was 10 years old. Her hair must be redyed every other episode to maintain its vibrant color (Marie Claire interview with Christina Hendricks)

In earlier seasons of Mad Men, Betty Draper wears a softly curled bob that is sweet and innocent. Towards season 4 as the series progresses in to the 1960’s, Betty begins to wear more grown up styles such as the elaborate beehive featured below. For long hair styles, a sleek beehive is a great way to make a bold (yet classic) statement for New Years. You can wear one like Betty’s or ask your hair stylist for a more modern rendition.

If you do not have the length to pull off a beehive, consult with your stylist about hair extensions. Hair extensions are a quick and easy way to get the length you have always wanted without having to wait for your hair to grow.
